Watch Size Guide: How to Match Case Diameter & Lug-to-Lug to Your Wrist

Case diameter alone is deceptive: a 40 mm watch with long, straight 50 mm lugs can overhang a 6.5-inch wrist, while a 42 mm cushion-case diver with 47.5 mm curved lugs wears compactly. Here is how collectors and watchmakers calculate true wrist fit.

The 75%–88% Coverage Rule

Divide the watch’s lug-to-lug distance by your top-of-wrist flat width. A ratio between 72% and 84% delivers classic dress and GADA proportions; 85%–92% yields a bold modern sports fit; over 95% risks lug overhang.

Flat vs. Round Wrist Cross-Section

Two people with a 170 mm (6.7") wrist circumference can have top surface widths differing by 5 mm. A flat, oval wrist presents a wider 57 mm stage, while a rounder wrist presents a narrower 52 mm top plane.

Integrated Bracelet Flare

Watches with integrated bracelets (Tissot PRX, Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, Vacheron Overseas) have fixed first links that extend the effective lug-to-lug span by +3.5 mm to +5.0 mm beyond the metal case.
