How to Measure Your Ring Size at Home With ±0.10 mm Precision
A single US half-size represents just 0.41 mm of internal diameter. Whether you are sizing an existing ring, measuring a bare finger, or planning a surprise engagement proposal, here are the four most reliable methods ranked by metrological accuracy.
Method 1: Existing Ring on Screen (Best · ±0.10 mm)
Place a well-fitting ring directly on your calibrated smartphone or monitor. Expand the optical reticle until the outer edge of the gold circle kisses the inner metallic bore of your ring with zero light gap.
Don’t have a ring handy? Switch the studio to Finger Width mode, rest your ring finger flat against the screen, and align the parallel caliper jaw lines with both sides of the widest part of your knuckle and base.
Method 3: Non-Stretch Paper Strip (Classic · ±0.35 mm)
Wrap a 5 mm strip of crisp printer paper (never stretchy yarn or string) snugly around the base of your finger, mark the overlap with a fine 0.5 mm pen, and measure the millimeter length against our on-screen ruler.
Average Ring Sizes for Women & Men (By Finger & Build)
If you are ordering a surprise gift and cannot measure the recipient’s finger directly, jewelers rely on anthropometric population distributions. Note that the dominant hand typically measures 0.25 to 0.50 US size larger than the non-dominant hand.

5 Golden Rules to Avoid Costly Resizing
Measure at Room Temperature in the Evening: Fingers shrink in cold weather and early mornings, and swell by up to 0.5 size in summer heat, after exercise, or after salty meals.
Test Knuckle Clearance: A ring must slide over the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) knuckle with a gentle twist taking 1–2 seconds, without spinning freely at the base.
Never Use Stretchy String or Dental Floss: Yarn, thread, and floss stretch under tension, compressing soft tissue and reading 1 to 1.5 sizes too small. Always use non-elastic printer paper.
Size Up for Wide Bands (6 mm+): Wide cigar bands and eternity rings displace more skin along the finger shaft. Add +0.25 US for 5–6 mm bands and +0.50 US for 7–10 mm bands.
When Planning a Secret Proposal, Err 0.25 Larger: Sizing a solitaire engagement ring down by a quarter or half size is fast and invisible for any bench jeweler, whereas sizing up requires stretching or adding gold.
How to Secretly Find Your Partner’s Ring Size
If you want to keep an engagement ring a complete surprise, borrow a ring your partner wears on their ring finger (or middle finger, which is typically 0.5 to 1 full US size larger than the ring finger) for just 30 seconds:
30-Second Screen Match: Place their ring on our 1:1 Optical Ring Sizer, tap Save Reading or take a screenshot, and return the ring immediately.
Smartphone Overhead Photo: Lay their ring flat on a table directly next to a standard credit or transit card, snap a top-down photo, and upload it into our studio’s Photo Overlay Mode later at your convenience.
Inner-Edge Paper Trace: Place the ring on a sheet of paper and trace carefully around the inside metal wall with a sharp mechanical pencil.
